The Greeks used marjoram as a common medicinal herb. It was used to treat spasms, excess fluids, as an antidote to poisons and to help digestion. It was used as a good luck token for newly weds and planted in graveyards to bring peace to the dead. In Latin the word "marjor" means "great". The term great was once used to refer to the prolonging of life. The oil is yellowish, darkening towards brown as it ages. The plants thrive on sunny hillsides.

Uses
When used as a steam inhalation, marjoram will clear the chest and ease respiratory difficulties quickly. It is one of the best oils to use in the treatment of asthma, bronchitis and colds. A hot bath containing 6 drops of marjoram will often prevent some of the secondary problems of a cold from developing. It can be massaged into the throat and chest to soothe a tickle in the throat and coughs. It is warming, analgesic and sedative nature calms and relieves spasms.
