Sitting In The Dark

by Dr. Rita Louise

The other day the overhead light in my office went out. Not only did the light bulb stopped working but the entire ceiling fan the light hangs from quit. For the next few days I sat in my office working to the light that emanated from my computer monitor. The thought of having to replace the fan or worse yet, having a major problem with the wiring in my home was overwhelming.

Three days went by with me fumbling around in the dark before I mustered up enough nerve to take some action. Finally at the end of the third day I went down to the breaker box and threw the breaker. I held my breath as I flipped the switch to turn on the light. Slowly the blades of the ceiling fan started to turn. I recall staring at the blades of the fan, wondering if they were really turning or if what I was seeing was a figment of my imagination.

After a few tense moments, I walked into the room and pulled on the chain that turns on the light. It was a miracle... The light turned on. I was shocked. My belief and my conviction that there was something seriously wrong had totally overwhelmed any thoughts that this could have been a simple problem with an equally simple solution. It amazed me at how paralyzed this situation left me.

We all have situations crop up on our lives where we have found ourselves sitting in the dark. The question we need to ask ourselves, when we are in situations like these is - Why?

In my experience, the underlying emotion that keeps us trapped is fear. We are afraid. We are afraid of the potential outcome. In turn, our response to the feelings of fear we are experiencing is to wait, procrastinate, ignore or avoid the issue entirely. This does not mean that the problem has gone away. It just sits in the background and builds up steam.

During this period of inaction, we typically let our imaginations work triple time creating every imaginable dooms-day scenario we can. Our imaginations can wreak havoc on us leaving us trapped from an emotional point of view. Even thought we do not have any evidence to support our theory, many times we end up believing that leaving well enough alone is better than discovering if our fears are true. We do not want to let the chips fall as they may because we might find ourselves living out one of the nightmares we had envisioned. This causes our forward movement to come to a grinding halt.

Now granted, our thoughts regarding the potential outcome of a situation may in fact play out exactly as we imagined. In most cases, however, what we think, what we believe and what we fear have no basis in the reality at hand. The sad part about this whole scenario is that we will never know what the truth is until we take steps to move forward. We have to take a leap of faith. In my situation, it was more like a flip as opposed to a leap, but I think you get my point.

In recent years, life, living has been very hard for many of us. It is as if we have been on one giant rollercoaster, with some ups, but many downs. It can be hard to navigate through life when we do not know what to expect from day to day. Many of us have made plans or held hopes for what we want or where we hope to go in the future. Sometimes the things that we strove for work out beautify, like a well-orchestrated piece of music. We look at our achievement with awe. We think how wonderfully the universe works and with so little effort on our parts. Then there are the other times when we work very hard on something with our hopes high and our trust factor on overload. Then when things reach their conclusion the results of our labors falls short of what we expected or does not happen at all. After a while, even the best of us will eventually want to throw in the towel and just give up.

I am often left to wonder if what we are feeling and experiencing in recent days has been felt at other points in our history. Could it be that the shifting energies we are experiencing part of our spiritual evolution? I can only hope so.

So, what can we do when we would be happy, perhaps even excited, if life were to give us a lemon? The first thing to do is to breathe. Close your eyes and take a nice deep breath. Give your body and your psyche an opportunity to allow the energy of the loss, change, transition or fear to move though you. Remind yourself there is not anything you can do, at that point in time, to change what is going on. You can only accept where you are, or the circumstances around you, and move on. The thought of taking our problems, issues and concerns and shoving them in a box, and burying the box in the closet, does sounds appealing at times like these, but this will not fix the problem. I only wish life were that easy.

Next, do not blame yourself. Granted, there might be lessons to learn from the situation. If we blamed ourselves for all of our shortcomings, we will only end up bruised, battered, and less likely to try again. This is especially true for individuals who try to work with the Law of Attraction. When something does not go the way we envision, we tend to analyze each of our thoughts, feelings and actions. What did I do wrong? Why did I attract "this" into my life?

Sometimes things just happen. Trying to figure out why I attracted a shorted out fan into my life to me seems like an exercise in futility. So the next time something happens to you that is unexpected or out of the ordinary, observe it, acknowledge it and move on. Ask yourself, what should I do now or next. Then, listen to yourself and do it. There is no reason to sit alone in the dark. By taking steps forward you will soon see the light that is at the end of the tunnel.
